Early History of Humanity

CHAPTER XIII
Early History of Humanity

Evolution of the Black World Insofar as the known facts permit, we shall try in this chapter to retrace the major stages in the evolution of the Black world since Homo sapiens appeared on the scene. In addition to providing a reference system for the young African researcher, the picture thus presented, with its inevitable gaps, its uncertainties, but also its areas of clarity, will give him an idea of the seriousness and magnitude of his task. I have directed my efforts to the period of the African past ranging from- prehistory to the appearance of modern States at the end of the Middle Ages, for this is the span that poses the greatest number of problems for understanding the history of mankind. Priority of the Negro Factor in the History of Humanity The results of archeological finds,1 especially those of Dr. Louis Leakey in East Africa, enable us every six months or so to penetrate more deeply into the obscurity of the first rough outlines of humanity. Thanks to dating methods based on the dosage of potassium 40/Argon, we can go back 1,700,000 years. Nevertheless, there is continued agreement that Homo sapiens, modern man, appeared about 40,000 years ago, during the Upper Paleolithic.

This first humanity, belonging to the lower layers of the Aurignacian, was probably related morphologically to the current Black type of humanity. The characteristics of that Grimaldi race have been summarized as follows by Marcellin Boule and Henri Vallois in Fossil Men, translated into English by Michael Bullock: When we compare the dimensions of the bones of their limbs, we see that the leg was very long in proportion to the thigh, the fore- 260 Evolution of the Black World 261 arm very long in proportion to the whole arm; and that the lower limb was exceedingly long relative to the upper limb. Now these proportions reproduce, but in greatly exaggerated degree, the characters presented by the modern Negro. Here we have one of the chief reasons for regarding those fossils as Negroid, if not actually Negro. The Negroid affinities are likewise indicated by the characters of the skull. These are large; the crania are very elongated, hyper-dolichocephalic (indices 68 and 69) and, seen from above, they present a regular elliptically shaped contour, with flattened parietal bosses. The skulls are also very high, so that their capacity is at least equal to that of the average Parisian of our day: 1,580 cubic centimeters in the case of the young man, 1,375 cubic centimeters in the case of the old woman. The mastoid apophyses are small. The face is broad but not high, while the skull is excessively elongated from the front backwards; so that the head might be called unbalanced or dysharmonic. The forehead is well developed and straight; the orbital ridges project only slightly. The orbits are large, deep and sub-rectangular; their lower border is everted toward the front. The nose, depressed at the root, is very broad (platyrrhinian). The floor of the nasal fossae is joined to the anterior surface of the maxillary by a groove on each side of the nasal spine, as in Negroes, instead of being bordered by a sharp edge, as in the white races. The canine fossae are deep. The upper maxillary projects forward in very marked fashion. This prognathism especially affects the subnasal or alveolar region. The palatal arch, though only slightly developed in breadth, is very deep. The jaw is strong, its body very thick; the ascending branches are broad and low. The chin is not greatly developed; a strongly marked alveolar prognathism, correlated with the upper prognathism, gives it a pronouncedly receding appearance. The majority of these characters of the skull and face are, if not Negritic, at least Negroid.2 . . The other types found in Europe probably belonged to the Cro-Magnon race: the Predmost man (in Moravia) and the Brunn man (near Vienna) were perhaps Cro-Magnoids with "Ethiopian" characteristics. . .. Such are the facts revealed by archeology. On the strength of this evidence, we must recognize in all objectivity that the first Homo sapiens was a "Negroid" and that the other races, white and yellow, appeared later, following differentiations whose physical causes still escape science. Refusing to accept these facts,

Speech by Marcus Garvey - 28 August 1924

Speech by Marcus Garvey

New York, 28 August 1924

MARCUS GARVEY IN CLEAR SPEECH REVEALED THE MOTIVE BEHIND THE RAPE OF THE REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA THE CONVENTION INFORMED OF THE TRICKS OF DIPLOMACY IN DEPRIVING LIBERIA OF HER FREEDOM · . .

The order of the day is discussing the report of the delegates from Liberia bearing on the arrangements with the Liberian Government and people to colonize that country.

You heard the report yesterday from the secretary and from Lady Davis, a member of the delegation, as well as the report of the President-General and the statements of the Hon. Van Richards, chaplain to I the Senate of Liberia· Now we are going to discuss it this morning ....

The present government consists of a family arrangement. The President is brother-in-law to the Secretary of State, the Secretary of State is brother-in-law to the Attorney-General, the Attorney-General is brother-in-law to the other heads of depa~unents, and so it is a family ring.

While the common people of Liberia have been suffering for over one hundred years, nothing has done to bring the great bulk of the native people, two millions of them, the pale of Westem civilization, which we are seeking to do through the of the Universal Negro Improvement Association.

And the position is when we publish, as we published in The Negro World some time in intention of building the first American city on the Cavalla River, saw we were in earnest, because the program that we laid out building on the Cavalla River was on a modem American plan, and they well that when American Negroes and West Indian Negroes had gone Liberia it would be a question of about 25 years when we would have a first-class nation on the West Coast of Africa, proving the Negro's ability for self-government, a thing the great powers do not want.

THE ANGLE OF SELFISHNESS

That is the whole sum and substance of the situation from the intema- angle. Then from the angle of selfishness. After we had incurred expense, so the delegates from Liberia explained, after we had two arrangements with the Liberian officials, one in I92I welcoming the association Liberia and signing the document of welcome, the other in I923, the of Liberia himself outlining the manner, the method in which we proceed, appointing his Vice-President as Chairman of the committee was to perfect the arrangements, the Chief Justice of the country, and of Customs, a member of his own cabinet, with some of the prominent men in the country, after they had outlined the plan under k we should work, they suggested the first group should reach in October, prior to reaching there we should send out a group of expert men to homes so that when the people get there they would have homes to live We sent away from here in June the first group of experts, six engineers the direction of a licensed civil engineer of z5 years' experience, work-for one of the biggest companies in this country out West. We sent out two shipments of materials, one on the 25th of June and the last on z;ch of July. They accepted the landing of the materials, and then, after all that, without an official word to us, they decided to send through Consul-General

Black Star Liner

The Black Star Line was a shipping line incorporated by Marcus garvey, who organized the UNIA (United Negro Improvement Association). The Black Star Line derived its name from the White Star Line, a line whose success Garvey felt he could duplicate, which would become a standard of his Back-to-Africa movement. It was one among many businesses which the UNIA originated such as the Universal Printing House, Negro Factories Corporation, and the widely distributed and highly successful Negro World newspaper. The Black Star Line and its successor, the Black Cross Navigation and Trading Company, operated between 1919 and 1922. The Black Star Line stands today as a major symbol for Garvey followers and African Americans in search of a way to get back to their homeland. The shipping line was supposed to involve the transportation of goods and eventually African Americans throughout the African global economy. The Black Star Line started in Delaware on June 23, 1919. Having a maximum capitalization of $500,000, BSL stocks were sold at UNIA conventions at five dollars each. The company's losses were estimated to be between $630,000 and $1.25 million. The Black Star Line did surprise all its critics when, only three months after being incorporated, the first of four ships, the SS Yarmouth was purchased with the intention of it being rechristened the "Frederick Douglass." The Yarmouth was a coal boat during the First World War, and was in poor condition when purchased by the Black Star Line. Once reconditioned, the Yarmouth proceeded to sail for three years between the U.S. and the West Indies as the first Black Star Line ship with an all-black crew and a black captain. Later Joshua Cockburn, the captain of the Yarmouth, was accused of receiving a "kick back from the purchase price". The SS Yarmouth was not the only ship to be purchased in poor condition and to be completely oversold. Garvey spent another $200,000 for more ships[citation needed]. One, the SS Shadyside, sailed the "cruise to nowhere" on the Hudson River one summer and sank the next fall because of a leak many thought to be sabotage. Another was a steam yacht once owned by Henry Huttleston Rogers. Booker T. Washington had been an honored guest aboard the ship when it was owned by his friend and confidant, Rogers, and was known as the Kanawha. However, Rogers had died in 1909, and the once well-maintained yacht had also served in the first World War. Renamed by the Black Star Line the SS Antonio Maceo, it blew a boiler and killed a man off the Virginia coast on its first voyage from New York to Cuba, and had to be towed back to New York[citation needed]. Besides oversold, poorly conditioned ships, Black Star Line was beset by corruption of management[citation needed] and infiltration by agents of J. Edgar Hoover's Bureau of Investigation (the forerunner to the FBI), who - according to historian Winston James - sabotaged it by throwing foreign matter into the fuel, damaging the engines[1]. The first commission for the Yarmouth was to haul whiskey from the U.S. to Cuba before Prohibition. Although the ship made it in record time, it did not have docking arrangements, so it lost money sitting in the docks of Cuba while longshoremen had a strike.[citation needed] A cargo-load of coconuts rotted in the hull of a ship on another voyage because Garvey insisted on having the ships make ceremonial stops at politically important ports.[citation needed] The Black Star Line ceased sailing in February 1922. It is regarded as a considerable accomplishment for African Americans of the time, despite the thievery by employees[citation needed], engineers who overcharged, and the Bureau of Investigation's acts of infiltration and sabotage. Reggae singer Fred Locks, an adherent of the Rastafari faith, re-introduced it to a Jamaican audience with his 1976 hit Black Star liners (which has been called one of "the most important songs in reggae music of the 1970s"), portraying Garvey as a Moses-like prophet:[2][3] Seven miles of Black Star Liners coming in the harbour / [...] I can hear the elders saying / These are the days for which we've been praying / ... [Marcus Garvey] told us that the Black Star Liners are coming one day for us. The Black Star Line was also commemorated in song by blues singers Hazel Meyers and Rosa Henderson,[citation needed] reggae singer Burning Spear[citation needed], and the musical group Brand Nubian (on their 1993 album In God We Trust).
